TKA Sponsors the 10th Annual Brian W. Schira Golf Tournament
In September, TKA sponsored the 10th Annual Brian W. Schira 102 Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament. Our CFO, Jeff Niederhausen, sits on the board and helped start the foundation in memory of childhood friend, Brian Schira, who was killed in the line of duty on April 8, 2008.
Brian was a local firefighter who was also beginning to train to be a paramedic when he passed away. In the state of Ohio, to be a full-time career firefighter paramedic certification is required. In many cases, firefighters work part-time at different fire departments to support their families and do not receive benefits. The ultimate goal is to be hired full time to receive benefits and be employed by one fire department. While some fire departments will pay for paramedic training, many will not which can be a financial hardship on those that choose this career path. The foundation raises money to award scholarships to local firefighters who are pursuing their paramedic certification and training as Brian was.
In it’s 11th year, the foundation has now awarded $112,500 in scholarships to 33 students. This year, scholarships went to:
